WASHINGTON, D.C. – In case you missed it, WLRN highlighted a letter signed by U.S. Senate Special Committee on Aging Chairman Rick Scott and committee members Senator Mark Kelly, Ranking Member Kirsten Gillibrand, and Senator Ashley Moody, to Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent, and U.S. Secret Service Director Sean Curran. In the letter, the senators requested these agencies to prioritize investigations to dismantle foreign schemes behind financial scams, particularly affecting aging Americans. The senators’ request comes after the committee released their annual Fraud Report which outlines the rising financial threats facing America’s aging community and provides guidance on how they can identify, respond to, and report such scams.

In a letter sent last week to Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Secret Service Director Sean Curran, members of the Senate Special Committee on Aging demanded coordinated investigations to dismantle foreign fraud networks exploiting seniors, citing $3.4 billion in losses and trafficked labor in Southeast Asia in 2023.
