WASHINGTON, D.C. – Tomorrow, Wednesday, October 8, Chairman Rick Scott and Ranking Member Kirsten Gillibrand of the U.S. Senate Special Committee on Aging will hold a hearing titled “Bad Medicine: Closing Loopholes that Kill American Patients.” Building on the committee’s previous hearing on America’s overreliance on foreign-manufactured generic drugs and the risks they pose, particularly to aging Americans, this hearing will focus on identifying solutions to problems previously outlined. This includes efforts to build a resilient domestic generic drug manufacturing base to ensure American patients have access to affordable, high-quality, and safe drugs.
The hearing will focus on potential legislative and regulatory actions to address these systemic vulnerabilities in the drug supply chain. Members will receive testimony from expert witnesses who will provide recommendations to reshore pharmaceutical manufacturing, increase supply chain transparency, require and implement country of origin labeling, and close critical loopholes such as the Acetris loophole that threaten drug safety and accessibility, among other topics.
