Senate Unanimously Passes Collins-Casey Resolution Designating May as “Older Americans Month” 2018

Washington, D.C.— The U.S. Senate unanimously passed a bipartisan resolution introduced by U.S. Senators Susan Collins and Bob Casey, the Chairman and Ranking Member of the Senate Aging Committee, designating the month of May as “Older Americans Month.”  The resolution recognizes the success of older Americans and the important role they have in our society.

“Every day, millions of older Americans enrich our society by sharing their wisdom, experience, and skills with their families and communities,” said Senators Collins and Casey in a joint statement.  “This resolution recognizes seniors’ many contributions that benefit and strengthen our country and calls on all Americans to support policies that encourage older individuals’ ongoing leadership and participation.”

More than 51.6 million people over the age of 65 live in the United States, accounting for 15.8 percent of the total population. In 2016, approximately 9.3 million veterans of the Armed Forces were 65 years old or over.

The resolution was cosponsored by Senators Marco Rubio (R-FL), Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), Richard Burr (R-NC), Bill Nelson (D-FL), Thom Tillis (R-NC), Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV), Deb Fischer (R-NE), Joe Donnelly (D-IN), Doug Jones (D-AL), Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), and Kristen Gillibrand (D-NY).
