WASHINGTON, D.C. – In case you missed it, WMNF highlighted the U.S. Senate Special Committee on Aging’s recent field hearing in Florida: “Protecting Florida’s Seniors: Fighting Fraud and Financial Exploitation,” covering topics related to the rising threats America’s aging population faces in regard to scams and financial fraud with expert witnesses discussing how government officials at each level along with community leaders can work together to better protect aging Americans and the best practices to prevent, report, and respond to fraud and scams. The field hearing followed the committee’s recent release of their annual Fraud Report which details the growing financial threats facing America’s aging community and provides guidance on how they can identify, respond to, and report such scams.

“A report from the U.S. Senate Aging Committee found that fraud and scams cost seniors over $4.8 billion last year.
Senator Rick Scott addressed the concerns with state leaders and law enforcement in Miami-Dade County today.
Senator Scott said the number of scammed seniors may be even higher than what’s been reported.
‘Many seniors don’t report being scammed out of fear, shame, or the simple belief that nothing can or will be done,’ Scott said.

Scott encouraged seniors to notify local law enforcement quickly and not be ashamed to do so.
Senator Rick Scott also discussed bills he introduced targeting scams.”
