Chairman Scott, Ranking Member Gillibrand Announce Aging Committee Hearing on America’s Dangerous Overreliance on Foreign-Manufactured Generic Drugs

WASHINGTON, D.C. – On Wednesday, September 17, Chairman Rick Scott and Ranking Member Kirsten Gillibrand of the U.S. Senate Special Committee on Aging will hold a hearing titled “Prescription for Trouble: Drug Safety, Supply Chains, and the Risk to Aging Americans.” The hearing will examine the serious threats posed by quality issues in foreign-manufactured generic drugs, as well as the risks that vulnerable pharmaceutical supply chains present to both public health and national security. The committee will focus on the dangers of overreliance on foreign-manufactured generic drugs, particularly those from China and India, and how quality failures in these medications disproportionately endanger older Americans.

Expert witnesses will testify on the urgent need for stronger Food and Drug Administration (FDA) oversight, including more rigorous testing and foreign inspection parity, as well as the importance of reshoring the production of essential medications here at home in America. The hearing will also spotlight tragic cases of adverse events linked to substandard generics and highlight solutions to protect the health and safety of aging Americans.
