Chairman Scott, Ranking Member Gillibrand Announce Aging Committee Hearing on Disaster Readiness for Seniors Ahead of the 2025 Hurricane Season

WASHINGTON, D.C. – On Wednesday, May 14th, Chairman Rick Scott and Ranking Member Kirsten Gillibrand of the U.S. Senate Special Committee on Aging, will convene a hearing entitled “Preparing for Disasters: Unique Challenges Facing Older Americans focusing on the urgent need for disaster preparedness. Ensuring America’s seniors are ready for natural disasters is especially important, as older Americans often face heightened risks and unique challenges during emergencies. With the 2025 hurricane season beginning on June 1st, the hearing will highlight the importance of having a clear, actionable emergency plan in place before disaster strikes.

Witnesses will include Sheriff Chris Nocco of Pasco County, Florida, Jennifer Pipa of the American Red Cross, and L. Vance Taylor from California Governor Gavin Newsom’s Office of Emergency Services. These experts will share firsthand insights and best practices for protecting America’s seniors during emergencies in an effort to raise awareness and inspire action among older adults, caregivers, and policymakers across the country.
